Edwardian Villa, Jesmond

Domestic extension and remodelling

The second of two projects we’ve completed on this leafy road in the heart of the Jesmond Dene Conservation Area.

We were commissioned to reimagine the rear of this semi-detached Edwardian villa. The clients sought a design that provided a bright, flowing family home whilst respecting the existing period features and character of the house.

In contrast to the previous arrangement, we designed an elegant side return extension, constructed out of matching brick punctured with a zinc wrapped, iroko framed corner picture window to provide a distinctive juxtaposition to the main house. The extension was complemented by a subtle re-ordering of the internal arrangements.

The extension roof is constructed with a patent glazing system that bathes the kitchen, dining, and living areas in light throughout the day. Beyond the semi-public spaces of the house, we provided practical utility and boot rooms that can be discretely accessed from the front of the house to aid the practicalities of family life.

Overall our proposal saw the property transformed into a bright and elegant home designed for modern family living and entertaining.
